Primary School Places
THE FACTS
There are two problems that need to be addressed in Herne Hill:
1) Availability of places and
2) Parent choice
- There is a shortage of primary school places all over London. However, Lambeth is in a worse position than most boroughs.
- It is the local authority’s duty and no one else’s to ensure every child has a place.
- There are spaces for September 2009 but most of these are in schools that are not very popular with parents.
Jessop Primary School. Rosendale School and Jubilee Primary School will be permanently expanded to provide some places. - All applicants received a place last autumn. However it was not possible for many to get into their chosen schools.
- There were more applications for school places than expected due to a large number of people moving into the borough and choosing to stay here to educate their children.
- The council has accepted that it needs to provide more places.
- Lambeth Council have been forced to introduce temporary classes in the borough to meet demand.
- It is projected that there will be an additional 2,000 places required in the next 5 to 10 years in Lambeth alone. The council leadership currently have no plans in place to address this.
